Introduction: |
The only Biotechnologist at National Metallurgical Laboratory, till date, and is responsible for setting up the “Biomimetics” group in the Department of Materials Science and Technology here. The group which also has a theoretical physicist and an organic chemist has so far published over 60 papers in this new field, H-index-8 and 5 patents. The emphasis of the group is to use biomolecules such as proteins, carbohydrates and amino acids for the synthesis of nanomaterials of biomedical importance, with a stringent control over size and morphology. Extensive work has been done on nanosized hydroxyapatite and iron oxide both as particles and as stable colloidal fluids. Technologies have been transferred to Industries and are being commercially produced in India.
